Marshall-Smith Syndrome
Marshall-Smith syndrome is a disease with accelerated bone age and large growth at birth. It has been described in the literature in about 30 cases. Patients also have some facial abnormalities, such as a prominent forehead, protruding eyes, and forward facing nostrils.
Serious symptoms include: failure to thrive, feeding problems and a strong tendency to respiratory infections. Those affected often die already in their first years of life.
The cause of the syndrome is unknown.
In rare cases, patients without respiratory complications survived longer, but were found to have mental retardation.
