Primary biliary cirrhosis
PBC is the late stage of chronic inflammation of the biliary tract in the liver called non-purulent destructive cholangitis. It is a chronic disease that begins at the small bile ducts in the liver.
The chronic inflammation causes gall blight. This gradually narrows the length until finally they are completely closed. In the further course, the entire liver tissue becomes inflamed, fibrotises, and liver cirrhosis gradually develops.
90% of all patients are women, 10% men. Untreated, it will transform into complete cirrhosis of the liver over a period of 10-12 years with decreased liver function.
So far, PBC is classified as an autoimmune disease. The etiology is not yet complete.
